Santa Cycle Rampage 2010 Post Ride

Santa Cycle Rampage 2010 Post Ride

Saturday, December 11th ushered in the 2010 edition of the Santa Cycle Rampage. The weather was decent with temps near 40 most of the day. A bit o’ rain towards the end but, hey, 40 in Wisconsin, in December, is cool with me. (As I write this Sunday PM it is out 8 degrees F out so we were lucky!)

The day’s ride started at Cafe Hollander on Milwaukee’s Eastside, a quick PBR at Nomad World Pub then headed to Lakefront Brewery along the Milwaukee River, just north of Downtown, Rehorst Distillery in the 5th Ward (with a side trip to Conejito’s for lunch!), the Tamale Stand on 16th, Kochanski’s Concertina Bar where a live Polka Band played and free food was had, a stop at the same liquor store on Lincoln we stopped at last year, and on to the post-ride party at Cafe Centraal in Bayview. We had a couple more unofficial stops on the way back to the Eastside at Duke’s and Rascal’s. Total this year – 10, up 2 from last year!

The number of Santas seemed up this year from last years approximately 250. Lakefront Brewery gave out over 300 beer tokens! Riders dressed in all manner of Holiday-themed garb from Santa and his helpers to reindeer or other associated holiday garb. I had a new Santa suit courtesy of a great deal on a retired rental suit from Bartz’s.

My ride for the day was about 25 miles, the actual route was approximately 13 miles the extra being travel to the start and back to the shop. Other riders put in upwards of 30 miles.

There was excellent beer to be had at each venue with some favorites including, Fat Tire, Riverwest Stein, Fat Squirrel, Wheat Monkey, Zywiec (Polish) as well as some great Vodkas at Rehorst and even a tasting of Absinthe at the distillery.

As we rode there was a tremendous outpouring of good will towards the Santa group. Hundreds if not thousands of people shouted, cheered, whistled, followed, photographed, shot movies and, in general, made the ride extra special. Being 250-plus strong the Santa procession often stretched over a city block. Motorists were, for the most part very courteous and allowed the procession to hold together. We did, on occasion split at a particularly busy intersection but usually caught up to the group and arrived at our destinations intact.

No police escort this year for our part of the ride but we got separated after Rehorst and caught back up at Kochanski’s. Coupld been one!

This was assuredly one of the biking event highlights of the year! I’ll be back next year with bells on!

Metro Mountainbikers Fall Social Ride 2010

The Metro MTB Fall Social Ride took place on Saturday, October 23rd on the South Side of Milwaukee.

A dozen riders met at the South Shore Parking lot and were initially greeted by a dreary, rainy morning, however, Marty had some cans of alcohol infused whipped cream to get things started and keep our minds on the task at hand. Interesting. I had no idea that this stuff even existed! Vanilla and Chocolate were the flavors of the day

We headed south along the shore of Lake Michigan and while we were at our first stop at Sheridan’s on South Lake Dr. the rain subsided and by the time we left that establishment about 11:30 the rain was done! Sampled a Racer 5 beer there!

Next stop was Slick Willies in South Milwaukee. This was our lunch stop and the Slick Willie was the burger of choice for many. Burger, 2 kinds of cheese, grilled onions and grilled mushrooms. It was delicious! for some reason I chose Buch beer here. Probably because it is more like water and the ride had a bunch more to go!

Gravel trails, railroad beds and powerline trails were much of what led us to our next stop at City Lounge in Cudahy. There was a pretty cool bunch of small jumps in the area that the old Ice Center was built on. Just southwest of the City Lounge.

Some kind of Dachshund convention was going on at the City Lounge so  it only seemed proper to sample Dachshund’s Ankle Biter Ale. A good brew! BTW, there were about 20 of the squat, little dogs at the Lounge. Apparently a club of owners gets together a few times a year there as the owner is a Dachshund fan himself and makes the place available to the club.

We popped through the St. Francis Brewery after a bit of railroad track and track bed riding where several beers made on site were available. I gave the Nut Brown a try and liked it enough for a second.

An impromptu stop at Gordie’s had us drinking the obligatory PBR.

My final stop was at Sara’s house where a passable pre-mixed Long Island Ice Tea. Sara was the lone lady on the ride so buck up next year women and join us!

While I had a 50th birthday party for a couple of friends to attend the rest of the crew hit a couple more stops.

The trails along the Lake Michigan Bluff are pretty decent with some great views and lots of nice twisties.

As for equipment, I rode my Simplified 29’er. The 9’er is currently set up as a 1×9 and that worked well for this ride. Plus, I am still loving the Manitou Minute 29’er!

Interbike 2010 Quick Report

Surly Troll and Surly Trailer
Spinner and The Captain

I’m heading Home From Interbike. Killing some time ’till my flight home. Another year, another Interbike in the books. It was a long one this year. Sorry, family, it was how the flight worked out.

They announced this year that Interbike will be moving to Anaheim next year as well as being in mid August instead of late September. Fine by me! Vegas is getting old and, as we are manufacturers, the timing is better. I can take my family! For retailers, especially Midwest retailers in our own backyard, I think it will be tough to go in the middle of the selling season. Hope it works out for them!

I met The Captain, Spinner, Drew and Sean in Las Vegas on Sunday so we could hit the Outdoor Demo Days at Bootleg Canyon and ride a bunch of cool bikes. Lots of nice stuff out there. A few things struck me about the MTBs:

– Carbon has come a long way since I last rode a plastic bike. The ride on the Marin and the Breezer I rode was well damped and the bikes are stiff where you need them to be. Cost is still a barrier though. The high-end spec Breezer is $5,600 or so! Yikes. I think I’ll stick with steel and more realistic components. Crash worthiness is a consideration too. There is not much material in a 2.5 lb frame!

Sov The Captiain and a Pug
Sov, The Captiain and a Pug

– If I lived near Bootleg Canyon outside Vegas I’d have to have a Full Sus rig! No doubt about it, having tons of plush travel on both ends is great at 30-40 mph down the side of the mountain. Back home in Wisconsin I don’t need it, which is good because I don’t need ANOTHER bike. Oh, wait, see below.

– Rode a Pugsley again this year and there is a complete bike version available this year. I got one coming! Let me know if you are interested in one. Winter is coming and I can hook you up! Note that you can also go down the side of a mountain just fine on the Pug. I know, I did it!

The coolest product I rode that is more targeted to our bikes was the redesigned Nuvinci Continuously Variable hub. No gear steps!. When we last rode this thing it was 9-pounds! Nine! The new version is much more in line with the currently available Nexus and Alfine hubs and seems lighter than the i-Motion 9. I guess that is what shaving 3 pound off will do. The are also bomb proof, very smooth and have a wider “gear” ratio than previously. Good on ya, Nuvinci.

Surly has a nice trailer too. Gonna have to look hard at one because I can think of a lot of uses for one and the ability to unhook when you don’t need it is a real plus over a cargo-specific bike. Tracks behind the bike incredibly well, even with The Captain on board.

Saw a lot of cool, commuter/urban oriented clothing. Good to see that you don’t have to look like a rolling billboard to enjoy the benefits of technical fabrics and comfort. you can do it and still look stylish.

I’ll have more thoughts after I digest more of what I saw. See ya!

Checking Out Schlick Bikes

… and having some fun.

Hard to keep up with reports on bike-related events we go to but here is a minor whack at that.

Tour of America’s Dairyland races are behind us. I hit Shorewood and Downer Ave. Good times at both. We had a few bikes at a house party on Lake Dr. for the Downer race where several people took Tony’s belt drive Smitty for a cruise, including me! It is a super ride. Can’t wait to get my own.

There are a few pix on the Flickr site here.

Coming up we will be at several Superweek races including Downer Ave. on July 24th. Look for us on Lake Dr. about a block and a half north of Bradford. We will have bikes to check out and possibly a cold one or two!

New Belgium’s Tour de Fat Coming to Milwaukee

The country’s merriest festival of bikes, costumes and whimsy is coming to Milwaukee for the first time. Tour de Fat takes place at Milwaukee’s Humboldt Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 3.

New Belgium Brewery has been taking its whimsical Tour de Fat around the country for a number of years. Some of the unique features of this unusual event include a bicycle parade through the city in the morning, costumes, beer garden and various festivities.

During the festival one rider will trade in his or her car for a fully loaded commuter bike. To be eligible, participants must submit a 2 minute video to New Belgium Brewery explaining why they want to live car free.

Suggested donation for participants is $5, which goes to the Bicycle Federation of Wisconsin. Click here for a schedule.

The Bike Fed needs 100 volunteers to register participants, staff the beer tent, marshal the parade and conduct sundry other activities throughout the day. Volunteers who serve a minimum of two hours receive a Tour de Fat t-shirt and two beer tokens. For more information or to sign up, please contact the Bike Fed’s Jessica Binder.

Wrap Up – Schlick Cycles | The Nut Factory Open House 2010

Schlick Cycles Open House

On Saturday night, February 20th Schlick Cycles was part of the 6th annual Nut Factory Open House  Located in the historic Nut Factory building at 3720 N. Fratney St

The following artists had their studios to show their work and working environments: Christopher Poehlmann, Gregory Klassen, Michael Davidson, Schlick Cycles, Tom Jelinske, Shana McCaw + Brent Budsburg, Annoushka Peck, Will Pergl, along with some special guests Cody Frei, Alec Regan, Dan Lawton and several others.

Schlick Cycles was a pretty busy place! We had several versions of the Shark, Smitty, SuperFast and Simplified Bikes as well as Tom Teesdale’s Mountain Bikes.

In addition, Greg’s friend Tom displayed his art – really cool, LARGE pieces, accessible and somewhat ironic art. “Spokes Model” Dave’s metal pumpkins got a good reception.

This year there is a good website showing photos, artists and other pertinent info. Have a look at:

Schlick Cycles at Santa Cycle Rampage

Saturday, December 12th turned out to be a great day for the The 2009 edition of the Santa Cycle Rampage. The weather was great with sunny skies and temps in the mid-30’s most of the day. Undoubtedly the relatively mild conditions were part of the reason approximately 250 riders dressed as Santa, his helpers, reindeer or wearing other associated holiday garb did the ride. Conservative estimates placed the Santa participation at about 200 while several folks were bandying about the 300 number. I’d say 250 would not be a stretch. Shea from the Bike Federation, one of the sponsors, is going to check with Lakefront Brewery to see if they did a count of free beer chips they passed out to get a better idea. The weather was great so the participation was super!

Santa Cycle Rampage - Milwaukee

Throughout the day we visited Cafe Hollander on Milwaukee’s Eastside, Lakefront Brewery along the Milwaukee River, just north of Downtown, Rehorst Distillery in the 5th Ward, Kochanski’s Concertina Bar where a live Polka Band and free food and the post-ride party at Cafe Centraal in Bayview.

There were also pre-ride meet ups at Fuel Cafe in Riverwest, the ‘Tosa Cafe Hollander and Anodyne Coffee in Bay View where riders met to travel together to start at the Downer Ave. Cafe Hollander.

Santa Cycle Rampage - Milwaukee

My ride for the day was 18.75 miles, the actual route was approximately 13 miles the extra being travel back because the route did not end at the starting place. Other riders put in upwards of 30 miles and, while we were milling about at the post-ride party we met up with 3 guys who had just ridden in from Chicago putting about 90 miles on that day! Joe, Kendall and I also added in a stop at Cubanita’s on Milwaukee St. and Osteria del Mundo in the Knick on Juneau on the way home. I topped off the stops with a look in at Rascal’s bringing my Santa Stop total to 8.

Santa Cycle Rampage - Milwaukee

The main highlight for me from the even was the camaraderie of 250 Santa Cyclists. I started out with a core group of friends but found myself riding with other groups most of the day meeting people and making friends along the way. More highlights included free Fat Tire beer, the excellent weather that had us biking in sunny 35 degree conditions most of the day, the Polka Band at Kochanski’s, more beer, the raffle and the Police escort (see more below!)

Santa Cycle Rampage - Milwaukee

Santa Cycle Rampage - Milwaukee

At the Rehorst Distillery stop we picked up a Police escort! The pair of officers in the squad were just awesome! They looked out for the group, herded it together when it began to stretch out and blocked intersections, errant motorists and random ill-willers so that we could travel safely and as a group. They broadcast our Santa Radio station on their PA, cajoled and rankled with us at stops and, even though they were not drinking, joined us at the post-ride party. Goodwill from the cops was the unexpected pleasure of the ride!

This was absolutely one of the biking event highlights of the year! I’ll be back next year with bells on!

I know the Bike Fed was a major sponsor. I don’t know all the others but South Shore Cyclery and Ben’s both gave raffle prizes.

Metro Mountain Bikers Milwaukee Fall Ride

On October 3rd Dave and I headed over to Benno’s to meet the riders on the Fall ride for the Metro Mountain Bikers of Milwaukee.

The morning looked kind of dismal early but by the time we were ready to go the sky was looking friendlier and when we arrived on the parking lot behind Benno’s several folks were getting ready to roll.

We headed in to the bar for a bit of AM fuel in the form of Riverwest Stein for me and a Spotted Cow for Dave and met the growing group of riders.

A bit after 10AM we hit the road with a group of close to 30 riders.

Milwaukee Metro Mountain Bikers Fall Ride 2009

The route for the day took was all new to me but from what I remember it was a blast! We mostly headed along the Menomonee River either in the culvert or on some really nice off road trails with diversions to the Valley Inn, Leff’s Lucky Town, Bubba’s Cave, ‘Tosa Hollander and a nice stop in the woods with, you guessed it, beer! There is a partial route track from my iPhone here but since we started at 10AM and didn’t finish ’till about 6PM I ran out of juice for the p-hone. I’ll have to get an auxiliary battery for the next ride.

I rode my Teesdale Mountain bike and Dave had his new Teesdale MTB as well.

Check out more Metro Mountainbikers pix on Flickr.
