2018 Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee Recap

It turned out to be a beautiful day for the 34th running of The Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee bike ride when the forecasted 90+ degree temps never materialized. I think it topped out at about 83 but there was a nice lake breeze for much of the ride and that was fantastic.

This was my ride for the day. It is the first bike frame I had design input on back in about 1991 or 1992 in collaboration with Ralph Henderson and built by Tom Teesdale. Still amazes me how low the front ends were before suspension forks! I think I originally ran a 135mm 0d rise Control Tech stem on this bike with a flat bar at something like 580mm wide. A couple of years after I originally built it up and raced it in the WORS series, I upgraded to a Rockshox Mag 21SL with a whopping 48mm of travel. That changed the handling a little but, for midwest riding, worked pretty well. The drivetrain was, of course, Shimano XT.

Join The Schlick Team at Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee 2018!

Coming up in 2 weeks, on June 16th, 2018, is the 34th happening of Milwaukee’s longest running cycling event, The Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee. Originally billed as a bike ride through the seedy underbelly of Milwaukee, with stops at dive bars and pubs, the ride has morphed into an event that draws nearly 500 attendees each year with a movie-themed group ride uniting cyclists over a common love of bikes and beer.

Schlick Cycles loose-knit team of owners and riders will be along for the action so be sure to say howdy!

This year’s theme is Young Milwaukeestein, an homage to Young Frankenstein, Obviously!

The ride route varies from year to year but is generally a casually paced ride covering 15-25 miles over a 6-7 hour span.

Bike of the Week – SOLD! – Large Purple Tatanka Fat-bike

This bike has been sold! Roll on Kobe!

This particular Tatanka frame was fabricated by legendary frame builder, Tom Teesdale, to our specs. The complete bike was actually built up a couple of years ago but never ridden. That said, it has been knocking about the shop and has some minor scuffs and is sporting a 2 x 10 drivetrain that may not be the “in” thing right now but we think the range and versatility of the 2 x 10 setup are a perfect match for this Tatanka.

This bike should fit you well if you are between 5’10” and 6’2”. It may work well outside that range depending on how you like your bike setup.

Bike of the Week – For Sale – 54cm Schlick Cycles SuperFast Road Bike with Shimano Alfine 8

This Demo Model, 54cm, Schlick Cycles SuperFast is available at Everyday Cycles Riverwest Showroom in Milwaukee!

We built this SuperFast in about 2010 long before the recent disc road bikes started appearing. Plus, we built this one with an eccentric bottom bracket to allow for chain tension adjustment to accommodate a Shimano Alfine 8-speed Internally Geared Hub (IGH)! The idea was to build the ultimate commuter bike and the SuperFast lives up to the billing.

The red powder-coated 54cm frame is a Tom Teesdale built from TrueTemper Verus HT steel. The geometry is taken from Tom’s tried-and-true Allroad designs and can fit up to 35mm tires for sure. Depending on the tire you could probably even go 38mm. If you wanted to run fenders you could do up to 32mm.

Currently the SuperFast is sporting Fyxation Session 700 x 28 tires, which I find to be excellent urban assault tires, on Alex 28 rims laced up with black double-butted spokes. The rear hub is the Alfine 8-speed SG-501 while the front hub is an Alfine Dyno to power a 6v light system.

Bike of the Week – For Sale – Schlick Cycles Simplified 24” BMX Cruiser in Orange – Demo Model

See this bike at Everyday Cycles
Riverwest Showroom in Milwaukee!

We did a few 24” Cruiser BMX Frames for team guys a few years back. This particular Orange “Simplified” was a backup bike and was only run for a couple of weekends at the indoor track in Walworth county, a couple of fun sessions at Ray’s Indoor Mountain Bike Park while it was still around in Milwaukee and a couple of local pub/fun rides. Probably less that 100 miles total and is in excellent shape.

This is a “Made in the USA” 4130 Cro-Mo frame that was hand-built by Tom Teesdale. Serial Number TET432

For the Geometry we started with basic specs from our best racer’s Redline Pro Cruiser and tweaked them to his liking.

Bike of the Week – Greg’s SRAM Force 1×11 Growler – We Can Build You One Like This!

When I decided to build one of our Schlick Cycles Growlers for myself, I know pretty much what I wanted. A 1×11 SRAM Force 1 drivetrain, at least 40mm tires that would be at home on the dirt or the road, a high-quality wheelset and a Thomson cockpit. Mission accomplished and it rides even better than I expected!

The Growler line was made for us in Portland, OR by Zen Bicycle Fabrications shortly before they closed shop. Seems shorter run jobs like ours couldn’t sustain their business model but the fact remains that these Made-in-the-USA frames are excellent build quality and have some really well thought out features that make them perfect Allroad bikes. We still have a handful of these frames as well as the Velocity Aileron Pro Wheelsets that we spec for the builds and can custom build you a one-of-a-kind bike that will give you years of satisfaction. Contact us at info@schlickcycles.com and let us help you spec out your dream ride!

Bike of the Week – Gulf Racing-Inspired Custom Schlick Cycles 2-speed Road Bike – For Sale

Schlick Cycles custom gulf Porsche bicycle

Greg and I have a car “thing” along with our bike “thing.” Especially for vintage race cars – mostly late 60’s and early 70’s. The Gulf Porsche 917 is maybe one of the most iconic and we love it. We love it so much we decided to have one of our Simplified bikes painted in this distinctive color scheme. You may be wondering “what is your Simplified bike line?” Well, at one time early on at Schlick Cycles we were dabbling with a line of singlespeed bikes. We learned pretty quickly that gears are good. We live in a fairly hilly area around Milwaukee and because of our technical savvy with various gearing drive trains (okay maybe our age and fitness level had something to do with it), we have only built bikes with multiple gears from that point on.

So, this particular bike started out as a single speed with cow horn bars and only one gear.

Available Now! Growler Framesets $1299

We’ve been building All Road bikes in the Good Ol’ US of A for a very long time. Before Schlick even existed, in fact! Some companies are now calling these Gravel bikes. I get it, we rode thousands of miles of Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa gravel on bikes going back to the ’70’s that are very similar in geometry to the current gravel bikes. Guess what, they work great on the road too. Weird, Huh?

Our Growler is the latest iteration of the most versatile of road bikes with:

Amazing Healing Power of Beer

We’ve been getting these “Amazing Healing Power of Beer” stickers for years at the Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee from event organizer, Pee Oui Roubaix, or as he’s been know by others, Mr. Phil Van Valkenburg.

The Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee, coming up on its 35th year in 2018, is the oldest continuously running group ride in the greater Milwaukee area and has a long history of underground/pirate DNA. The original rides back in the late ’80’s were most definitely underground with probably a dozen riders lilly-padding

Greg’s Smitty with Rohloff Internally Geared Hub and Gates Carbon Drive

I’ve got the original fork back on my Smitty after spending several months playing around with the Lauf suspension fork. I really liked that fork but it has quite a bit longer axle-to-crown length that the Smitty was designed for so I was keen to get the handling back to where I like it.

For what its worth, I really like the Lauf for an urban assault bike and I had a ton of fun with it on the Smitty. Someday I may build a Smitty frame specifically corrected for the Lauf so I can maintain the handling I like from the stock fork.

Just like our 29-plus wheel builds, we’ve been building a lot of fat-bike wheels. I started shooting photos and will post them to a gallery on this page. Builds have been mostly our Northpaw-S 47mm fatbike rims with 170/135 hubs from Hope, Paul or Salsa although we have done both offset and symmetrical builds with Surly Marge Lite and Rolling Darryl rims as well.

We are open to suggestions for your dream fatbike wheelset! Let us know if we can build a set of wheels for you! info@schlickcycles.com

29-plus Wheel Builds

29-plus-wheel-build-2626

We’ve been doing quite a few 29-plus builds lately. I’m going to get photos when I can and post them to a gallery on this page. Builds have been divided between 135/100 sets for the Krampus and other 29-plus bikes that use the MTB standard and the fat-bike standard 170/135 builds we do both for our 29-plus bike as well as folks converting their fat-bikes to 29-plus. I probably don’t need to tell you which are stronger but both build up well!

So far most of the wheelsets have used Hope hubs, black double butted spokes and black brass nipples but we are open to suggestions that will fill your needs.. Let us know if we can build a set of wheels for you! info@schlickcycles.com
